We are against FGM!
FGM is a fundamental violation of human rights. In the absence of any
perceived medical necessity, it subjects girls and women to health
risks and has life-threatening consequences. Among those rights
violated are the rights to the highest attainable standard of health
and to bodily integrity.
FGM is, further, an extreme example
of discrimination based on sex. The Convention on the Elimination of
All Forms of Discrimination against Women defines discrimination as
"any distinction, exclusion or restriction made on the basis of sex
which has the effect or purpose of impairing or nullifying the
recognition, enjoyment or exercise by women, irrespective of their
marital status, on a basis of equality of men and women, of human
rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social,
cultural, civil or any other field". Used as a way to control women's
sexuality, FGM is a main manifestation of gender inequality and
discrimination "related to the historical suppression and subjugation
of women" denying girls and women the full enjoyment of their rights
and liberties. FGM is a crime and Khalid Adem strongly condemns this
outdated practice.

On November 01/2006 a 31 year old Ethiopian, Khalid Adem, who lives in Atlanta, Georgia was convicted for battery and cruelty against children. He was first accused of committing the crime in 2003. After about three and half years of recess the court convicted Khalid and sentenced him to 10 years in prison and five more in probation.
The first accusation came from his ex-wife Fortunate Adem, (who is originally from South Africa, Zulu tribe*) and moved to the USA when she was six. The couple met at junior college in Georgia. They were married in 1997, and their daughter was born in September of 1999. The family settled in Duluth, Georgia. It is alleged that in September or October of 2001 the father circumcised his two-year-old. They divorced bitterly in 2003 after the mother accused the father of circumcising their child. Fortunate said to the police that Khalid committed this crime in their Dulth apartment in October 2001. Fortunate claims she did not notice her daughter's circumcision until two years later after the fact. The allegation materialized during a contentious divorce and custody battle in 2003. Khalid was arrested and imprisoned for ten days before being released on bond.

Khalid Adem, an innocent
man with no criminal record, sits in jail serving a ten year sentence
for a crime he did not commit. His family and friends along with Ethiopians living in Atlanta have started a joint effort to free Khalid!
We are currently working in three major aspects of this tragic
case:
- Preparing for Khalid’s legal battle by identifying and hiring a
new legal team.
- Raising funds to cover legal
expenses
- Responding to the negative and untrue allegation made by his x-wife and repeated by the media without any critical analysis
- Creating awareness in our community on the issue and about the case specifically through discussions.
The support for this effort pouring
from all over the world has so far been overwhelming. In order to
coordinate all of our efforts, to communicate well, and become
effective what we are trying to accomplish, we have created this website. We will add more information to the site continuously!
